Playground equipment-The new play area has been a great success and is often packed with children of all ages

Derbyshire's National Tramway Museum in the popular village of Crich is a bit of a hidden gem and investment in a revitalised outdoor play area here has improved facilities enormously. The Museum has had an outdoor play area for many years, however, it was recently identified that some elements needed updating and that almost a complete replacement was required and Wicksteed ticked all the boxes.

It was decided that the development of the outdoor play provision should include a mixture of both timber and steel as long as more excitement and greater play opportunities would be on offer for visitors to enjoy – particular the slightly older aged children. Wicksteed Playground’s design was selected and the whole area was enhanced. The Northamptonshire-based company was commissioned, in part, due to personal experiences of the museum team behind the project and their knowledge of the market place. The museum’s wish to provide bright and colourful new play items as well as tactile timber products to fit in with the existing site and to allow many different forms of play and accessibility was eventually realised.

The improved play area includes a popular Cableway, timber swings and an exciting multi-play Mordred unit from the new Castle range.

Whilst the more traditional items, such as swings, were part of the brief, newer more quirky products like Wicksteed’s interlocking log climber in the shape of a Pick Up Sticks was an essential part of the scheme as was a thrilling steel and timber Cableway.

Dr Mike Galer, General Manager of Crich Tramway Village & National Tramway Museum, said: “The new play area has been a great success and is often packed with children of all ages, watched by happy parents. We have had good feedback and the cableway, in particular, has gone down really well."

Jan Barratt, Learning and Participation Manager said: “We have planned the new play area carefully to help encourage active play and team participation, which will complement our learning and trail activities for children”
