Playground equipment-Unity Canopy Puts a Twist on the Traditional

Taking classic playground structures and re-imagining them to be more relevant for how kids play today was a thought-provoking and motivating task that resulted in our new product, Unity™ Canopy. The small and large canopies are part of the Unity collection, which also includes the Dome, Slide Climber, Steppers, Teeter Tunnel™ and Rushmore™. When designing the equipment, we first looked at how kids play today. Then we asked ourselves: what play experiences would be most relevant to them?  For one thing, kids like being together with other kids. They are alone on many games so being together and facing a new challenge with friends is what their play space needs to be about.

Creating playground equipment with multiple levels of difficulty is essential. Kids today want to play in different ways and share their experiences. Think about the popularity of social media—when kids accomplish something or exceed a goal, they tell their friends about it instantly. Our new Unity Collection of re-invented playground classics goes beyond giving kids the chance to tell others about their experiences; Unity products provide opportunities for kids to share their experiences and plan their next conquest together.

The Unity Canopy is our modern take on traditional monkey bars. When asked, children repeatedly list the monkey bars as one of their favorites. While they liked the idea of getting up off the ground, many were set up to fail. There was only one way to play—get up, get on, travel across, and get down. Many would fall if they didn’t have the strength to make it all the way across, and then some would quickly give up, never to try again. We understand the benefits of upper body activities, but wanted something that would encourage children to be challenged.  We want kids to try to succeed in different ways on their own terms while engaging with one another together—not one-at-a-time during a singular experience.

Unity Canopy can be played with in different ways. It has lower points and higher ones, so children can access it from all angles with assistiveclimbing cleats on support poles that help give them a foot up to grab on and go. Using circles instead of a ladder-type design creates interest and various sizes encourage discovery and exploration. They can climb up through, and strive to reach the lookout point on the large Canopy to view the playground from a different vantage point.

Furthermore, by being non-linear, it adds challenge as children play — they can go straight, veer to the left to let a friend pass on the right — there is no right or wrong way to play on Unity Canopy — every direction is a good direction.  And to keep things even more interesting, the canopy itself isn’t flat — it’s wavy, presenting even more challenge while developing upper body strength. For kids who feel “up” isn’t their thing, the space underneath the Canopy is perfect for simply hanging out.

The old saying, “everything old is new again” takes on a new life here atPlayworld. We take play seriously to give kids some much-needed unstructured fun. Unity Canopy engages children to overcome challenges, create their own adventure, and engage with one another. Unity lets children be here. Now. Together.
