Penrose Park & Recreation District to assemble new playground equipment
Children in Penrose and surrounding areas finally will have what they've been missing out on for a number of years — brand new playground equipment.
The Penrose Park and Recreation District will host a Community Build Day, beginning at 7 a.m. Saturday at Penrose Park, located at 401 Fourth Ave., in Penrose. Volunteers will gather to unpack, assemble and place new multi-faceted playground equipment, including slides and a climbing wall.
Those interested in helping are welcome to attend a meeting at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Penrose Community Center, located at the park.
Volunteers are needed Saturday to help with ground preparation, equipment unpacking, equipment erection and placement and ground cover. Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be served to all volunteers.
"We plan to have the concrete pour at four o'clock, and once that is completed, we will need people to help us roll out the fabricated wood chips that are ADA approved," said Tina Heffner, board member. "This will be the first time our park has actually adhered to ADA regulations."
Heffner said this is the first effort of a six-phase revitalization project.
"The next phase will be a pond area," she said. "It will have a five-foot beach around it, it will be nine feet deep, there will be fishing available and we will have a beautiful bridge going across with a gazebo overlooking it."
The newly elected board of directors was sworn in Wednesday and plans to begin seeking grants for the pond project will move forward soon, Heffner said.
